Analyse The Problems
I've been building websites for years... decades actually. A common issue I see is content stuffed into a design rather than design supporting the intended results. This happens for several reasons:
- There is more focus on design than the desired outcome
- The site theme determines the layout, rather than the layout being determined by the content
- The content is focused on the site owner, rather than the needs of the visitor
- The design and development team are more interested in finishing the job and getting paid than getting results for the business
- There is a lack of understanding about what results are actually desired.
Design should support the desired result. It should not dictate the content or restrict the visitor in getting where they need to go. In other words, the tail should not wag the dog!
Find The Solutions
We start by reviewing, or analysing, the website and determining the issues that exist. Then, we get together on Zoom to discuss the problems and start to work out the best course of action.
Sometimes it's straight forward; move this here, modify that, delete that, etc. Often though, the course of action will be determined by the underlying architecture of a site. In other words, how it's built.
This is why I suggest a deep dive analysis before doing anything. A new design and new build with the same underlying flaws or limitations will simply result in the same issues, albeit in a different guise.
Implement The Fixes
Once a course of action is defined it's a question of how and who will implement it. That can be you, your web team, or if it's appropriate, I can assist. The main thing is ensuring that the issues are understood, the solution is defined, and the fix is actioned to ensure the desired results.
